In 2007, Congress established March 25th as National Medal of Honor Day. On March 25, 2008, the Congressional Medal of Honor Society, chartered by the Congress in 1958 and consisting exclusively of the living Medal of Honor recipients, chose this day to present Citizen Service Above Self Honors to three ordinary Americans who have gone above and beyond on behalf of their fellow man either through a single act of heroism involving risk of life or by demonstrating a profound long-term commitment to service before self. The Congressional Medal of Honor Society and the Medal of Honor Foundation is continuing this tribute to ordinary Americans who do extraordinary things. As such, we invite you to distribute a "Call for Nominations" for the Citizen Service Above Self Honors to your constituents and local media. A press release and nominations criteria are attached. Nominations may be submitted online at www.CitizenServiceAboveSelfHonors.org <http://www.citizenserviceaboveselfhonors.org/> . The deadline is February 12, 2009. All nominations will be considered and finalists will be selected and announced on Monday, March 9, 2009, from each state by a review board consisting of Medal of Honor recipients. Three finalists will be selected to receive the Citizen Service Above Self Honors at a ceremony at Arlington Cemetery in the shadow of the Tomb of the Unknowns at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 25, 2009. We will be happy to work with your office for presentation of a handsome framed certificate for your state finalist. Citizen Service Above Self Honors was previously known as Above & Beyond Citizen Honors. Despite the slight name change to better reflect the award's intentions, the prestige, selection criteria and process, and support by the Congressional Medal of Honor Society have not altered. A new branch of the Kids Care Club has opened up under the Cape Fear Volunteer Center, the " Port City Kids Care Club"! Lead by Laura Kranchalk their first venture was into the world of Microfinance and Feeding the Hungry. This was their very first project as the Port City Kids Care Club. They had some hiccups along the way but it was successful and the kids really enjoyed the work and accomplishments. They began by meeting on October 22, 2009 to discuss Their club mission and goals. They had some great conversations about helping others and appreciating the things they do have. The club talked about the issue of world hunger and learned many astonishing facts. Members planned the project during the first meeting and began making homemade cards for children at the Domestic Violence Shelter. The project was to benefit the Domestic Violence Shelter. They made some “Good Eats Bags” for approximately 25 children at the shelter. These bags included many nutritious and healthy snacks like Quaker Granola Bars, apple sauce, 100% fruit juice, trail mix and fruit cups just to mention a few. KCC participants also included some coloring books and crayons as well as some other little toys for the kids to play with. The children helped to shop for all of these items and then we met again to assemble the bags and finish making homemade cards so that each child received at least one card. In addition, one of the children in our club turned 7 during this time. He chose to ask for donations for the Domestic Violence Shelter and collected a lot of great items for the shelter. The people at the shelter were very impressed with our work and especially the generosity of our 7 year old. Overall this project was a great success and our kids were enthusiastic and proud of their accomplishment. They are looking forward to their next project. Current participants included: Danielle Kranchalk, Age 9, Ogden Davis Kranchalk, Age 7, Ogden (Davis is the one that asked for donations to the shelter for his birthday) Jack McErlean, Age 6, Ogden Connor McErlean, Age 10, Ogden Kalie McErlean, Age 13, Noble Kids Care Clubs are a branch of Hands on Network, the Cape Fear Volunteer Center is an affiliate of Points of Light Foundation/Hands on Network.
