Youth zone in Northside neighborhood offers crime alternatives By Shannan Bowen Shannan.Bowen@StarNewsOnline.com Published: Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at 2:45 p.m. Last Modified: Wednesday, April 21, 2010 at 2:45 p.m. The vision of the city's Blue Ribbon Commission on the Prevention of Youth Violence seems simple. They want a decrease in crime, higher graduation rates and a bright future for children. The problem lies in reaching those goals in high-crime areas, such as Wilmington's Northside neighborhood, where police have noticed a high rate of violent crimes and robberies, burglaries and thefts. So the commission, made up of community leaders, elected officials and representatives of various organizations, announced Wednesday the kick-off of Wilmington's Youth Enrichment Zone. Modeled after the Harlem Children's Zone in New York, the Youth Enrichment Zone will create community programs, educational experiences and youth development opportunities for people living in the Northside neighborhood. The neighborhood is bordered by Market Street, Fourth Street, Nixon Street, McRae Street, Rankin Street and Fourteenth Street. District Attorney Ben David said the area was chosen for the project after police analyzed a seven-year period of crime trends. Specifically, the goal is to enroll each child in the community in an after-school program so the children have alternatives to crime-related activities, said Tufanna Thomas, strategic director for the commission. David said the zone also will include prenatal programs, similar to Harlem's Baby College, which prepares expecting mothers for raising a child. Other programs will be available for each stage of a child's life through graduation. “We are trying to go to graduations instead of going to holding cellsWilmington Mayor Bill Saffo introduced the commission's project at Wednesday's kick-off ceremony, and said the project would have an impact on the entire city. “I think it is the way of the future for not only this community, but communities all around us,” Saffo said. The commission received start-up funding from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation and will continue to seek funding from partners to provide the youth programs for free or at low costs, Thomas said. The commission also will look for an army of volunteers to reach out to people within the Northside neighborhood, letting people know about the programs the Youth Enrichment Zone offers and taking notes about the community's needs, Thomas said. She said results will come in time, possibly even 10 years down the road, like the Harlem Children's Zone's accomplishments. According to statistics on the Harlem program's website, 100 percent of third-graders enrolled in one of the children's zone's programs tested at or above grade level on the state's math exam, outperforming peers in the state. Also, 86 percent of parents who had said they read to their children less than five times a week before the Baby College program said they improved their frequency. Thomas said anyone interested in learning more about Wilmington's Youth Enrichment Zone, or volunteering to help enroll children in programs, can contact the Blue Ribbon Commission on the Prevention of Youth Violence at 388-4512. It’s the simple gestures such as mowing a lawn or preparing a meal that mean so much to families facing difficult challenges. Since 2001, North Carolina’s military families have been challenged again and again. I’m proud to announce the creation of a new initiative – Carolina Helping Heroes – to connect service, community and faith-based organizations with families of deployed or seriously injured troops. Carolina Helping Heroes is simple: Organizations register on-line at www.carolinahelpingheroes.nc.gov and indicate what services they can provide, and then military families can search the site for community groups near their homes. It’s an easy process that can support our troops, strengthen our communities and help those neighbors in need. Carolina Helping Heroes cannot launch until we have enough groups registered—so that means we need you. With thousands of National Guard and Reserve troops called to active duty, military families are not just near military bases, they are in communities large and small across the state. This is our opportunity to honor their sacrifice by caring for their families – our neighbors. Visit carolinahelpingheroes.nc.gov and register your organization. Youth are identified as “at-risk” due to the following circumstances: involvement with the juvenile justice system, excessive in-school and/or out-of-school suspensions, poor academic performance, and lack of positive role models. The Cape Fear Volunteer Center is a 501c3 and works to recruit and train volunteers, match volunteers with youth, offer support and guidance through case management, and provide monthly group activities. A new branch of the Kids Care Club has opened up under the Cape Fear Volunteer Center, the " Port City Kids Care Club"! Lead by Laura Kranchalk their first venture was into the world of Microfinance and Feeding the Hungry. This was their very first project as the Port City Kids Care Club. They had some hiccups along the way but it was successful and the kids really enjoyed the work and accomplishments. They began by meeting on October 22, 2009 to discuss Their club mission and goals. They had some great conversations about helping others and appreciating the things they do have. The club talked about the issue of world hunger and learned many astonishing facts. Members planned the project during the first meeting and began making homemade cards for children at the Domestic Violence Shelter. The project was to benefit the Domestic Violence Shelter. They made some “Good Eats Bags” for approximately 25 children at the shelter. These bags included many nutritious and healthy snacks like Quaker Granola Bars, apple sauce, 100% fruit juice, trail mix and fruit cups just to mention a few. KCC participants also included some coloring books and crayons as well as some other little toys for the kids to play with. The children helped to shop for all of these items and then we met again to assemble the bags and finish making homemade cards so that each child received at least one card. In addition, one of the children in our club turned 7 during this time. He chose to ask for donations for the Domestic Violence Shelter and collected a lot of great items for the shelter. The people at the shelter were very impressed with our work and especially the generosity of our 7 year old. Overall this project was a great success and our kids were enthusiastic and proud of their accomplishment. They are looking forward to their next project. Current participants included: Danielle Kranchalk, Age 9, Ogden Davis Kranchalk, Age 7, Ogden (Davis is the one that asked for donations to the shelter for his birthday) Jack McErlean, Age 6, Ogden Connor McErlean, Age 10, Ogden Kalie McErlean, Age 13, Noble Kids Care Clubs are a branch of Hands on Network, the Cape Fear Volunteer Center is an affiliate of Points of Light Foundation/Hands on Network.
